Place Based Arts Education

From https://promiseofplace.org/:

“Place-based education (PBE) immerses students in local heritage, cultures, landscapes, opportunities and experiences, using these as a foundation for the study of language arts, mathematics, social studies, science and other subjects across the curriculum. PBE emphasizes learning through participation in service projects for the local school and/or community.”

Arts education is a key component to Place Based Education. Independent/ Private institutions very often have weekly, monthly, or annual rituals that give students a sense of place and a part of a greater institutional and bioregional legacy but often gatherings, group singing, and engaging in community arts is not a priority in Public School settings. Whole school, arts based PBE learning is such a valuable educational motivator.

Check out the Monadnock Region’s Place Based Education Website. At Symonds School, we meet every week to sing and present. Stay tuned for more on this subject.
